Descrizione

La sottospecie D. d. ponticus è stata proposta sulla base delle caratteristiche morfologiche (Barabash, 1935) che sono state successivamente criticate come non diagnostiche (ad es. Kleinenberg, 1956). Tuttavia, analisi comparative usando la morfometria del cranio (Amaha, 1994) e nuove analisi del DNA microsatellite (Natoli, 2003 citato in IWC 2004) hanno suggerito che esistono differenze tra i delfini del Mar Nero e del Mediterraneo, anche se una differenziazione significativa non era evidente da un piccolo campione di mitocondri DNA (Natoli, 2004). Al momento non è possibile essere definitivi, ma sembra probabile che il flusso genico tra il Mar Nero e il Mar Mediterraneo sia raro o inesistente.
